2008 Fall color report A Mountain Heath

The early sunlight was perfectly place to show off this mountain health, located on the Blue Ridge Parkway about mp 302.  As I mentioned before, a mountain heath is a fragile environment because the soil is shallow and winter brings harsh winds and temperatures.  Trees don’t grow there, or are very stunted.  The plants are various shrubs, briars, and low growing plants.

The sun was out this morning.  It’s a completely gorgeous Fall day.  Including, chilly.  Good day for chile and hot chocolate.  The reds and yellows are getting deeper.  We may not be at peak viewing yet but we’re getting close.  I hope you can get here within the next week.
