Event Description:
Americans’ understanding of the Revolutionary War and the founding of the United States will be explored in this talk. Through works by artists including Charles Willson Peale, John Singleton Copley and John Trumbull, audiences will consider how visual culture helped create a shared national story in the years surrounding the Revolution. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Elizabeth Chew, CEO of the South Carolina Historical Society. Dr. Chew has worked in museums and historic sites for nearly four decades, including leadership positions at James Madison’s Montpelier, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and Reynolda House Museum of American Art.
