Grandfather Mountain Highland Games – The Official Website of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering O' Scottish Clans
Event Description:
High in the Mountains of Western North Carolina the ancient Celtic spirit beckons. Answering the call, as hundreds of tartan banners unfurl, are the sounds of bagpipes echoing through the valley, and once again, thousands of kilt-clad Scots make their way to MacRae Meadows for their annual gathering and games. Nowhere in the New World is there a place more reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands than the home of America’s grandest Highland Games—Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina.

Monuments & Mythmaking: Creating the American Landscape
Event Description:
Art allows humans to imagine people and places they’ve met or visited, but that imagining is always mediated by the artist and their own perspective. As early as the beginning of the 19th century, Americans used visual art to imagine North American environments and their place within those landscapes. This talk will examine how artists, tourism boosters, politicians and others, wielded landscape painting and photography to various ends, including the dispossession of Indigenous lands, imagining technological futures and the creation of the national park system in the United States. This lecture will be presented by Dr. Stephen Hausmann, assistant professor of history at Appalachian State University, where he teaches courses on environmental history, national parks history and US history broadly. He previously taught at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. In 2024–2025, he was a Mellon-National Park Service research fellow at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. His current research project is an environmental history of the Black Hills of South Dakota.
This lecture series is FREE, however registration is required.

Trinidadian trumpeter and composer Etienne Charles has dedicated his recent works to highlighting the voices of marginalized peoples in the Americas. He broadens his scope with his latest composition, Earth Tones, a multimedia jazz performance featuring original compositions that draw attention to people and regions that are, or soon will be, severely affected by climate change. The performance invites us into a sensory journey that includes sounds, stories, and musical idioms from at-risk coastal communities, with images and short films of disappearing mangrove swamps, coral reefs, oyster beds, seagrass, sand dunes, and mud volcanoes. Featuring musicians from the very communities most at risk, the performance balances blunt reality, eternal optimism, and surrealism, ultimately offering an exhortation to address climate change’s impact on our future.
