Have you been on an adventure in the mountainous wilderness of North Carolina? Imagine carrying a kayak along a tree-lined trail and then paddling through the gently flowing water surrounded by natural mountain scenery. If this sort of adventure appeals to you, consider planning a visit to the New River Paddle Trail!
A few quick facts about the New River:
The average water level is 2.5 feet, varying from 2 feet to 8 feet depending on natural conditions. The relatively low water level and gentle flow makes this river a good option for beginner level adventurers.
The flow of the stream begins in Blowing Rock and flows north into Todd. This is one of the few rivers in the country that flows northward!
There are five public access points you can use to reach the New River: Boone, Pine Run, Todd Island Park, Green Valley Park, and Todd. View the map above to see how the river flows along these locations.
Certain access areas, such as Castle Ford, are privately owned. When planning your trip, be sure to park in one of the five public parking areas. And of course, be sure to behave with respect to the natural environment (as well as private property).
